And how they differ from modular and custom build.
These three words get used as though they mean the same thing, and they do not. The difference decides how tall your stand can be, what shape it can take and what it costs. Here is the straight version from a company that has built all three.
Three categories, not one.

Modular
Off-the-shelf systems: basic pole and panel, pop-ups, or aluminium frames with infill panels. Pre-manufactured, so you work to standard sizes and a standard height, usually 2.5m. Newer, pricier systems give you a little more height and shape, but the design is still bounded by the system.

Hybrid
A mixture of modular and custom build. System parts, most often light boxes, are combined with purpose-built elements. It was a common middle ground for years, though far fewer stands are built this way now.

Custom build
Designed and made for one brand and one space, with no system constraints on height, shape, materials or detail. It needs a bigger budget, and it is the category we work in.

When a system stand is the right choice.
We do not sell these, so we have no reason to talk you out of one. There are exhibitors for whom modular is plainly the better answer.
You exhibit five or more times a year
This is the clearest case for modular. When the same kit goes out that often, a system that packs down and reconfigures earns its keep, and the cost is spread across a lot of shows.
Your budget is fixed and modest
Modular is the cheaper category and is understood as such. If the budget will not stretch to a custom build, a system stand is an honest way to be at the show.
You want to put it up yourself
System stands can be self-built. That is a real saving if you have people willing to do it, and it is a large part of why the format exists.
Speed on site matters more than presence
A system goes up in hours rather than days. If your priority is a fast, predictable install, that is a genuine advantage.

You need height
Standard systems top out around 2.5m. On a busy hall floor that is the difference between being seen from across the room and being seen when someone is already standing in front of you.
You want a shape of your own
Components are pre-manufactured to standard sizes, so the footprint and the form follow the system. Even the more expensive systems that allow some shaping are still working within their own limits.
Personalisation is the point
We have explored these systems plenty of times over the years and invested heavily in the kit. To a man, our clients wanted more: more personalisation, more height and shape, and a more dynamic presence than a system would give them.
The design has to do something unusual
Double-deckers, real joinery, integrated product display, heavy hanging elements and bespoke lighting sit outside what a system will do.
How many shows?
Show count is the honest dividing line. At five or more shows a year, a system stand spreads its cost across enough events to make sense, and the speed of installation starts to matter more than the shape of the stand.
At two or three shows a year, the calculation flips. Those events are carrying your whole exhibiting programme, so how the stand looks and how tall it stands do more for you than saving a day on the build. A custom stand is also made to be dismantled, stored and rebuilt, and the graphics can be reprinted for a new campaign or market, so it is not a single-use spend either.

What we do
Custom build is the skilled end, and it is where we live.
Since 2001 every stand we deliver has been designed and handcrafted in-house by our own joiners, electricians and fabricators, in our workshop in Tamworth, around 20 minutes from the NEC. Where a system light box or similar component is the right answer within a custom stand, we use one.
Design and 3D visuals come free of charge for qualifying enquiries, so you see the stand before you commit to it. We handle graphics, lighting and electrics, transport, installation and breakdown, and we store the stand between shows.

What is a hybrid exhibition stand?
A hybrid exhibition stand is a mixture of modular and custom build. System components, most commonly light boxes, are combined with purpose-built elements to get some of the cost and speed of a system with some of the freedom of a custom stand. It was a common middle ground for years, though considerably fewer stands are built this way now.
Is a hybrid stand the same as a modular stand?
No, and the words get used loosely. Modular means an off-the-shelf system: pole and panel, pop-ups, or aluminium frames with infill panels, pre-manufactured to standard sizes. Hybrid means a system stand with custom elements added. Custom build means the stand is designed and made from scratch for one brand and one space, with no system constraints.
What is the difference between a modular stand and a custom build?
Modular is pre-manufactured and bounded: standard sizes, a standard height of around 2.5m, and a shape that follows the system. It is the cheaper category and it suits exhibitors doing five or more shows a year. A custom build is made for your space with no system limits on height, shape, materials or detail, and it needs a bigger budget. The honest trade is cost and speed against presence and personalisation.
How tall can a modular exhibition stand be?
Most off-the-shelf systems are designed around a height of about 2.5m, because the components are pre-manufactured. Some newer and more expensive systems allow a little more height and some shaping, but they are still working within the system's own limits. A custom build has no such ceiling beyond the venue's own height regulations.
Do T2 Display build modular or hybrid exhibition stands?
Not as a product line. Our work is custom build, designed and handcrafted in-house by our own joiners, electricians and fabricators, and we do use system components such as light boxes within a custom stand where they are the right answer. If a modular stand is genuinely the better fit for your budget and your show calendar, we will tell you so rather than sell you something you do not need.
How much does a custom exhibition stand cost?
It depends on the size of your space, the height and structure, and the features you need. A custom build needs a bigger budget than a system stand, so we would rather be straight with you early than waste your time. Design and 3D visuals are free of charge for qualifying enquiries, and everything else is quoted as clear, itemised lines.
